Did you know that the idea of International Yoga Day was proposed for the first time by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 27, 2014 during his speech at the UN General Assembly?

The date June 21 was chosen as it is the summer solstice - the longest day of the year. Overall, the proposal received support from 177 nations, the highest number of co-sponsors for any UN resolution proclaiming June 21 as the International Day of Yoga!

On June 21 In 2015, nearly 36,000 people, including Prime Minister Modi, and many other high-profile political figures from around the world, performed 21 asanas for 35 minutes in New Delhi on what became the first International Day of Yoga - and the day has been celebrated across the globe ever since.

THREE WAYS TO CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY:

  • Move your practice into nature. Feel the wind in your hair, stand with the trees, or find your flow to the sound of the sea.
  • Chant 'AUM' mantra - for yourself, or with others. It is powerful and provides a very special experience.
  • Ask your friend, your father, or your neighbor if they want to join you on the yoga mat. You must do a bit of missionary work on International Yoga Day - just like Prime Minister Narendra Modi did, that day in September, 2014, in front of the United Nations.
